‘Jo on the Road’ has taken me to Brighton, Goodwood and Camber Sands so far, but this week I find myself in the big city – oh yes, London! Not only am I in the middle of London, I’m cruising down the River Thames on a RIB ride. Exploring and learning about the city I actually grew up in.
On arrival at the pier under the London Eye, I check in and get into my life jacket, ready to board the speed-boat alongside ten other people. Luckily I get a seat right at the front of the RIB and we’re ready to go. Starting with a 25-30 minute insight into the history behind some of London’s famous landmarks – including the Houses of Parliament, London Eye, The Shard and Cleopatra’s Needle.
History was never my strong point but I was instantly pulled in and wanted to know more! Especially the tale behind Cleopatra’s Needle, if you’re superstitious then you’ll love this experience (well I won’t be giving it all away!). The tour guide, Jamie, was incredibly enthusiastic and made the ride even more enjoyable with every fascinating detail.
Following on from this brilliant insight to London – which was quite possibly the first history lesson I’ve ever listened to (sorry to whoever taught me in secondary school). The boat cranks up the speed and it’s racing time. Make sure you wrap up warm and hold on tight for this 20 minute powerboat ride, Nick (our driver) couldn’t wait to speed around the Thames and put my hairspray to the test!
The 50 minute experience will have you craving to know more about London that’s for sure! Perfect for first time Londoners or even parents trying to get their children that little bit more interested in what’s behind the culture and history of London – and unlike me, more involved in school history lessons!
